Career advancement options for registered nurses vary like in most careers. For some nurses who have been working in the field for awhile may feel they need to advance to management. However unless they have a B.S.N. degree this option may be limited. In today’s world however earning a higher degree may be possible for many even while working.

Several universities offer bachelors degree for working RNs who have not yet earned a degree. Being able to continue ones health education is good news for those wanting to climb the career ladder. This appears to be the case even when an RN is working full time.

While many may believe nurses only work with patients in a doctors office or in a hospital that is not always the case. Of course that is what many would expect but todays nurses have many more career options available. If they want to be a nurse but prefer not to work with patients it is possible. If they want to advance their careers it is possible.

In today’s competitive career environment many people decide to return to college to get an advanced degree. This also appears to be the case for RNs that have not yet earned a BS or higher degree. In addition if the nurse chooses to go beyond a BS degree it may be possible. As a result it appears many nurses are also choosing to go for the MSN degree.

In addition to RNs wanting to enter a management role others are choosing to advance their careers in a different fashion. More specifically some nurses are getting beyond a traditional career of working with patients to pursue other goals.

One such career option is to become a legal nurse which may require additional training. Once they go this route they may never work with patients again. Of course each person has to decide for themselves which career track to take but it is nice to have many options to choose from in ones career.

Legal nursing as a career choice does appear to be of interest to many experienced nurses. Of course not every RN plans to go this route as they like to be with patients to help them and their families. But there is a need for legal nurses as well. A career options such as this may only be available for experienced RNs to consider.

In additional to traditional nursing and legal nursing another career path some may later decide to venture into is that of a case manager. That is many decide they want to help people by being a case manager.

Regardless of the path one takes the options available for nurses to expand their careers are many. This is great news for current nurses and also those who are only now considering the career path. For many people having the additional options later in ones career can help them to decide to initially enter that field.
