Filed under: General. You may be worried about your child heading off to boarding school, but you’re not the only one. every year parents have the let their child fly the roost and move out of their protective comfort. Its only natural to be a little worried, after all they may never have been away from home for more than a couple of nights before. Your child is likely to be worrying also though. They are going to be staying somewhere they have never experienced before, we lots of new faces and without their family for support. Here are a few tips to help during the transition period.
Maintain contact. Initially it is very important that your child knows they can get in touch. Organise a specific time for phone calls and make sure you contact them until they tell you to stop bugging them. Children often don’t ask you to ring them and it’s much better for them to get fed up of you than long to hear your voice. Woodbridge School set aside an hour every evening for such phone calls
Send food and gifts. Post them something nice, maybe a hamper, every month of so. This could be anything from money to snacks. What it actually is that you send is not important, its more the fact that they will be happy someone outside of the school is thinking about them. They may like to share what you send with their friends also, helping them socialise. Always ask the school first however as some schools such as Millfield School do not allow gift parcels
Take up invites. If there is a school play on or a sports event then make sure you make it along every time, no matter what.Taunton School have events that run every other month and everyone is invited for a good get together with lots going on. Your child won’t feel like they are the odd one out if you go and you can often spend some high quality time with them
